Artists Statement
Much
of my artwork, although abstract, is landscape based. I grew up in western
Canada where the Rocky Mountains hover on the horizon and the Native American
tribes produce colorful artwork. For
many years I have lived in Saratoga Springs, NY, which lies in the foothill of
the Adirondack Mountains. Both these
places have had a very powerful influence on my work.
In
the first part of my career, I was a painter.
When sculpture became my focus, three dimensional forms and the natural
color of materials interested me. Some
of my sculptures have a sound component. However, after many years of fabricating
sculpture, the surfaces of the work began beckoning to me to use them in a
different way. Since I had always been
drawn to the look of printing plates, I started engraving and using ink and
paint to enliven the surfaces of both free standing sculpture and artwork for
the wall.
