     Artist Statement

My early training in the figure was the foundation for later work on a life sized scale; series of Goddesses and Dancers.  These pieces, done in a variety of mediums, prepared me for the commissioned work I was called upon to design and create for religious and secular organizations and individuals.

The variety in my use of materials expanded as my needs for a medium to perform in a certain way evolved. Scale, durability, viewer safety, pose and suitability for installation all played a part in medium choice, which had a subsequent effect upon the finished work.

Alice Manzi is a figurative sculptor who has lived and worked in Saratoga Springs, NY for many years.  Alice studied sculpture in New York City and in Italy, where she did her apprenticeship in marble sculpture.  She taught at Russell Sage in Albany for 9 years and as Adjunct Faculty in the Ceramics Department at Skidmore College for 22 years, ending in 2007.

Alice became known for her life sized figures in stoneware, featured in National magazines. Since that time she has developed her skills in numerous media including bronze and resins.  Manzi Studios opened in 1993, and  the business has created commissioned work for churches, corporations and individuals.
Alice received a NYSCA Grant to develop her figurative work in glass, and the small glass work has found it's way into gallery shows and private collections.
