Artist Statement
I have been painting for more than 40 years in two very different styles.
In my watercolors, I am less interested in recording what’s “out there” than in expressing both my emotional involvement with what I borrow from the visual world, and my excitement with the painting process. Watercolor’s fluidity and crispness make it a lively, dynamic medium perfectly suited to my temperament.

In my monotypes, I strive to invent a self-contained world in which colors, shapes, textures, and movement exist in their own right, with no conscious reference to anything outside. I walk the fine line between fostering spontaneity in the design while remaining mindful of aesthetic demands. Inventing an original visual world is analagous to the composer’s creation of a new sound world.
